How to Be Younger, Longer, part II

In my previous post I gave some tidbits on being younger, longer, etc. I promised a list of 10 terrible aging foods and 10 to anti-aging foods. Here goes:

The good news first: 10 top anti-aging foods-

1. Apples, 2. Blueberries, 3. Spinach, dark leafy greens, 4. Salmon and sardines, 5. Whole-grain cereals, 6. Popcorn, unsalted, 7. Legumes, including peanuts, 8. Green tea, 9. Nuts, notably almonds, walnuts, 10. Extra-virgin olive oil. Note: the bonus food now being placed on every list is the Acai berry. Grown only in the Amazon of Brazil. It can be consumed by pill form(only 80% of the pill form is actually absorbed) or liquid form(most of the liquid form is digested). The most popular brand for the Acai berry is Mona*Vie. It is packaged in a bottle looking like an expensive wine bottle, and it is good. I take it daily.

The bad news: 10 terrible aging foods-

1. Bacon, 2. Hot dogs, 3. Potato chips, 4. White bread, 5. White potatoes, 6. Corn oil, 7. Sugary processed cereals, 8. Sugary soft drinks, 9. Red meat, 10. Doughnuts. Note: from this list we see that most foods that are white in color are bad. While I can testify that I have eaten everything on this list at one time in my life I have been able to eliminate/and or cut down on these baddies considerably. All are very easy for me except the read meat, so I limit myself to two times per week and no more than 7 oz. at a time. After replacing white bread with wheat I have found it impossible to eat white bread again. The other items that I still eat are done on a very limited, moderation basis, i.e. bacon, hot dogs(once a year), potato chips, doughnuts, etc.

Aging is fun if you are healthy, and if you are not I can't imagine how dreadful it would be to face the day without feeling good. Remember, eat to live, not live to eat!!

I like to read your posts. I have to keep checking now and again because you don't write often enough. Like you, I eat a hot dog maybe once a year, and bacon maybe once every two months. However, I sure do love Dr. Pepper, but I do try to stay away from it.

Dee: Many thanks for your comments, sorry I don't post more often just too busy with one project after another. I also still compete in triathlon, so that takes time. This year our event production company is producing 8 triathlons(Lubbock, Dallas, New Braunsfel, Big Spring, Texas) and 1 motorcycle rally(Lubbock, TX). Busy times so I must stay healthy. This MonaVie product is really looking good for health and possibly a good part time income. I am more interested in the health aspect of it, but will take the income if it is there. It has paid off very well in my past two triathlon competitions. Go to my www.fasttwitchmind.com blog and it has some information on my last two events.

Will read your blog,

You are truly remarkable. I want to be like you as I age. I am far behind right now though because I have never done a triathlon. I would really like to do one, but I know that I must become much more focused and committed. You certainly motivate me! Keep up the great work you are doing to encourage health and fitness.

Thanks again, training for a triathlon is not difficult and competing for one can be accomplished by doing each discipline(swim, bike and run)3 times per week for 30 minutes each. As the 30 minutes gets easier, then move up to 45 minutes. With that training you can do a sprint, pool, triathlon. But, the main thing in life is to do some form of exercise, as you are doing, for fitness and not necessarily for competition. I helped a friend of mine get started in triathlon 8 years ago on this initial work out schedule and she has gone on to win the Ultr-Man triathlon(double the Ironman distance) 4 times and Race Across America twice. This is to the exteme, but does show how it all gets started.

Off to do a 5 mile road race this morning.
